01 · When preparation feels stuck

The work is happening. What is your child taking from it?

A year of coaching, a pile of papers, a disappointing mark. Before adding more, look at the step between finishing a task and starting the next one.

“We keep seeing the same mistakes.”

Ask your child to explain one solution in their own words. Video explanations for the maths and thinking-skills practice give them a method to pause, revisit and practise.

“The writing mark tells us very little.”

A comment needs an action. Use feedback to choose one revision, then read the changed paragraph together. See what that can look like below.

“Every practice session becomes a battle.”

Agree on one focus and a stopping point. Give your child a choice of task and recognise a clearer explanation or a thoughtful revision, as well as the score.

These are things to investigate, not a diagnosis of your child or their current preparation.

02 · Make the thinking visible

An answer is a result. A method is something to practise.

Here is the kind of question to ask after a mistake: which whole is the percentage referring to? Have a go before you open the reasoning.

Maths · Percentage changeSample

A backpack costs $80. Its price falls by 20%, then rises by 20%. Is it back to $80?

Follow the reasoning step by step
  1. Start$80The original price
  2. 20% of $80 is $16$64$80 − $16
  3. 20% of $64 is $12.80$76.80$64 + $12.80

The lesson. The second percentage uses a different starting amount. Equal percentages do not cancel when the whole changes.

Try the idea again: start at $100, reduce by 10%, then increase the new price by 10%.

Check the new example

$100 → $90 → $99. The increase is $9, because it is 10% of $90.

03 · Feedback with a next step

“Add more detail” still leaves a child guessing.

Useful feedback helps a child decide what to change. The value lies in the specific guidance and the revision that follows, whether the first assessment is written by a person or assisted by AI.

First draft

“I was scared.”

One revision idea

Show the feeling through an action. What might the character’s hand do before opening the door?

A possible revision

“My hand froze on the handle.”

Constructed example to illustrate actionable feedback. Not a student result or an actual assessment report.

What does “AI-assisted, human checked” mean?

AI-only feedback

Software produces the response. Without human review, a student may need help checking its interpretation and suggestions.

Human-only feedback

A person produces the assessment. Its usefulness still depends on how specific the comments are and how the child uses them.

How we work

Braintree’s process

AI assists the first assessment. A human checks accuracy and quality before the feedback is shared with your child.

A practice mark is not an official exam prediction. Human review does not make every judgement infallible; ask us about any feedback that is unclear.

04 · A first week you can picture

One focus. Room to learn. A clear place to stop.

Use this suggested routine at your child’s pace. Start with the material that addresses a gap in their current preparation.

  1. Choose together

Pick one focus: a maths method, a reasoning question type or one piece of writing.

  2. Practise, then review

Attempt the task. Revisit the explanation or read the reviewed writing feedback.

  3. Make one change

Try a fresh question or revise a paragraph. Ask your child to explain what they changed.

  4. Notice something worth keeping

A method explained, a mistake understood, a sentence improved. Agree on the next small focus, then finish.

You do not need to finish the whole library. Choose a pack for the practice your family can use. Leave room for rest, schoolwork and the things your child enjoys.

05 · A clear choice of packs

Choose the amount of practice that fits your family.

Compare the current inclusions below. Every pack is self-paced. The larger library is useful when your child has the time and need for the additional material.

06 · Your child comes before a school label

A school should fit the child. So should the preparation.

Selective schools can offer an appropriate learning environment for high-potential and gifted children. That does not make every selective school the right fit for every child, or a non-selective school a lesser outcome.

What should we consider beyond results?

Talk with your child about the journey to school, friendships, interests, available activities and learning support. Visit schools where possible and ask about daily life. Consider the whole experience rather than a ranking alone.

Coaching is optional. No preparation pack can guarantee placement.

The NSW Department of Education explains who selective schools are for and how entry works.

07 · Before you decide

Good questions. Straight answers.

A question about the material? Ask Braintree support.

Time spent is only one part of preparation. Look at what happens after a mistake: can your child explain the method, use it on a new question and revisit it later? Also check whether you are comparing tests of similar difficulty. A score alone cannot identify the cause. Start with one worked example here before deciding whether another resource will fill a real gap.

No. Braintree’s writing assessment uses an AI-assisted first pass, followed by a human check for accuracy and quality before feedback is shared. Human review is a quality-control step, not a guarantee that every judgement is error-free. If a comment is unclear, ask support for clarification. A practice assessment is not an official exam result.

This is self-paced preparation material, not live classes or one-to-one tutoring. It can sit alongside existing teaching. Choose the parts that fill a gap and agree on a manageable routine with your child; you do not need to complete every item to make use of it.

Ultimate offers a smaller practice library. Super adds more subject practice and a wider set of skill-building resources. Both listed packs include maths and thinking-skills video explanations and writing prompts with feedback. Choose based on the material your child will actually use, the time available and your budget. The current quantities and price are shown above.

This page is for the NSW Selective High School Placement Test for Year 7 entry. Families generally apply around the end of Year 5 or beginning of Year 6. Later entry in Years 8–11 uses separate school processes. Confirm your child’s entry pathway before purchasing; no test date or application deadline is implied by this page.
