Everything your child needs to prepare for the NSW Opportunity Class Placement Test — covering all three exam components with vocabulary, reasoning, and comprehension support designed for Year 4 students.
Complete one Reading, one Maths, and one Thinking Skills test under timed conditions. Don't prepare beforehand — this baseline reveals your child's starting point across all three OC components. Review solutions together, paying special attention to question types your child found challenging.
For Year 4 students, keep sessions short and consistent: 3–4 sessions per week, 15–20 minutes each. Alternate between the three OC subjects. Start the Vocabulary course (3 lessons per week) and Daily Paragraph Editing exercises (2–3 per week). At this age, enjoyment matters — avoid marathon practice sessions that create frustration.
Thinking Skills is often the most unfamiliar component for Year 4 students — many have never seen these question types before. The 100+ Non-Verbal Reasoning Lessons build pattern-recognition skills progressively. Work through 2–3 lessons per week alongside the timed Thinking Skills tests. This component typically shows the most improvement with consistent practice.
Strong vocabulary directly improves OC Reading scores — children who understand more words comprehend passages faster and more accurately. The Poetry Comprehension Tests are particularly effective for developing inference skills at the Year 4 level. Aim for 1–2 poetry tests per week alongside the vocabulary course.
Once a month, run a full mock session: one test from each component under timed, quiet conditions. The OC test is computer-based — practise on-screen if possible. Compare scores to the Week 1 baseline. In the final 2 months before the test, increase to fortnightly mock sessions.
Tests comprehension of fiction, non-fiction, and informational texts. Year 4 students answer 14 questions in 40 minutes. All questions are multiple-choice and computer-based.

The NSW Opportunity Class (OC) Placement Test is sat by Year 4 students for entry to Year 5 OC classes. The test is computer-based and covers three equally weighted components: Reading (14 questions, 40 minutes), Mathematical Reasoning (35 questions, 40 minutes), and Thinking Skills (30 questions, 30 minutes). Approximately 13,000 Year 4 students sit the test each year for around 2,200 OC places across NSW.
The OC test is designed to identify high-potential students, and each component tests different abilities. Reading assesses comprehension and inference at an advanced level for Year 4. Mathematical Reasoning tests problem-solving ability using Year 3–4 content. Thinking Skills measures logical reasoning and pattern recognition independent of curriculum — it is the component where targeted practice produces the most significant improvement.
This Super Pack provides depth across all three components: 86+ practice tests (20 Reading, 30 Maths, 36 Thinking Skills), 100+ Non-Verbal Reasoning Lessons for systematic Thinking Skills improvement, vocabulary courses that strengthen both reading comprehension and general academic ability, and 50 poetry comprehension tests that develop the inference skills tested in the Reading component. The 365-day access supports an extended preparation timeline of 9–12 months.
