Braintree Coaching's Non-Verbal Reasoning Mastery course builds the pattern recognition, spatial reasoning, and visual logic skills tested in the non-verbal or abstract reasoning sections of selective, HAST, IGNITE, ASET, and scholarship exams. It includes 95 solved test papers with 1,900+ questions covering 14 key topics — from matrices and analogies to 3D shapes and spatial transformations. 90 days of access for $99.

A comprehensive non-verbal reasoning course covering all 14 question types encountered in Australian selective, HAST, IGNITE, ASET, and scholarship exams.
Complete one test from each of the major topic areas (matrices, analogies, spatial reasoning). Most students find non-verbal reasoning unfamiliar because these question types are rarely taught in school. The diagnostic reveals which of the 14 topics are strongest and which need the most work.
Focus on one topic at a time, completing 3–4 test papers per week. After each test, review every solution — the explanations teach you to identify the underlying rules (rotation direction, shading patterns, element addition/removal). Understanding the rules is more valuable than memorising specific answers, because exams use new patterns that follow the same rules.
Non-verbal reasoning sections in exams are typically time-pressured — the HAST Abstract Reasoning section is 35 questions in 20 minutes, and the NSW Selective Thinking Skills section includes non-verbal items within 40 minutes. Practise completing test papers within strict time limits to build the pattern-recognition speed needed for exam conditions.
In the final weeks, revisit the topics where accuracy was lowest. Then complete mixed-topic tests to simulate exam conditions where question types change unpredictably. The ability to switch between different pattern types quickly is a key skill for exam day.
Non-verbal reasoning (also called abstract reasoning) appears in most Australian selective and scholarship exams under different names. The HAST calls it Abstract Reasoning. The NSW Selective Test includes non-verbal items in the Thinking Skills section. The ASET calls it Abstract Reasoning. EduTest tests it as part of Numerical Reasoning. Victoria SEHS includes it as Quantitative Reasoning. Despite the different names, the underlying skills are the same: pattern recognition, spatial reasoning, and visual logic.
Non-verbal reasoning is often the exam component where targeted practice produces the most dramatic improvement. The reason is simple: most students have never encountered these question types in school. Unlike reading comprehension or mathematics, non-verbal reasoning is not part of the standard curriculum. This means most students start with little or no experience — and even a moderate amount of practice builds significant familiarity with the patterns and rules that exams test.
This course covers all 14 question types with 95 test papers and 1,900+ questions. The detailed solutions teach the systematic approach needed for each type: identifying the variables that change (shape, size, shading, orientation, number), finding the rule governing each variable, and applying those rules to determine the correct answer. This analytical framework transfers to any new pattern students encounter in the actual exam.
Most students find these question types unfamiliar. This course teaches the systematic approach from foundation to advanced.
