A writing-focused preparation bundle with 38 prompts covering every text type assessed in the NSW Selective Test, plus vocabulary support to strengthen writing quality.
Choose one persuasive prompt and one narrative prompt. Give your child 30 minutes for each (matching exam conditions). Read their responses carefully, then compare them to the Band 6 model responses. Note the biggest gaps — is it structure, vocabulary, idea development, or length? This tells you where to focus.
Consistent weekly practice is more effective than intensive weekend sessions. After each piece, sit with your child and compare their writing to the Band 6 model side by side. Focus on one improvement area per week — for example, Week 2 might focus on paragraph structure, Week 3 on vocabulary choices, Week 4 on persuasive techniques.
Start the Foundation Vocabulary course and aim for 3–4 lessons per week. Strong vocabulary directly improves writing quality — students with broader word knowledge write more precisely and persuasively. Encourage your child to use 2–3 new vocabulary words in each writing piece.
The AI Writing Assessment Tool provides instant feedback on structure, vocabulary, and technique. Use it between the weekly parent-reviewed pieces for additional practice. It helps your child develop self-editing skills and understand what makes writing effective.
In the final 4–6 weeks before the test, practise every writing piece under strict 30-minute time limits. Include 3–5 minutes for planning and 2 minutes for proofreading. Building time management skills for writing is just as important as improving writing quality.
Markers assess the depth, originality, and relevance of ideas. Strong responses go beyond surface-level arguments and include specific examples, evidence, or creative detail.

A clear, logical structure scores highly. For persuasive texts: introduction, body paragraphs with topic sentences, and a conclusion. For narratives: orientation, complication, climax, and resolution.

Varied and precise vocabulary distinguishes top-band responses. Markers notice word choices that are specific rather than generic, and sentence structures that vary in length and complexity.

Accurate mechanics are expected. While a few minor errors will not significantly impact scores, consistent mistakes in basic spelling and punctuation reduce the overall impression.

Writing is worth 25% of the NSW Selective High School Placement Score — exactly the same weighting as Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Thinking Skills. Yet it is consistently the most under-prepared component. Many families focus heavily on multiple-choice practice because it feels more straightforward, leaving writing as an afterthought.
This creates an opportunity. In the multiple-choice sections, top students tend to score within a narrow range — the difference between a strong and an exceptional student might be only a few marks. In writing, the range is much wider. A student who scores in the top 10% for writing can significantly lift their overall placement score, sometimes making the difference between an offer and a near-miss.
The Selective Writing Super Pack addresses this gap with 38 prompts that cover the full range of text types assessed in the NSW Selective Test. The Band 6 model responses show exactly what high-scoring writing looks like — from persuasive essays with strong evidence to narratives with creative techniques. The included vocabulary courses strengthen the language foundation that makes writing more precise and compelling.
