What Is the WA GATE Program?

The GATE program provides accelerated curriculum for gifted students in Academic, Arts, and Languages streams. Academic programs operate at selective schools and partially selective colleges across metropolitan Perth and regional WA.

Key facts:

  • 24 participating schools across three streams
  • Perth Modern School — only fully selective academic school (225 Year 7 places)
  • Minimum TSS threshold for academic consideration: 209.5 (competitive schools require substantially higher scores)
  • Testing and placement are free; preparation resources are optional

Regional students can access metropolitan programs through boarding at City Beach Residential College and other facilities, plus means-tested support via the Olive A Lewis Scholarship.

ASET Format and Scoring

Prepare for WA ASET and GATE Entry

Structured courses with practice tests across Reading, Writing, Quantitative Reasoning, and Abstract Reasoning.

The Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) is developed by ACER and measures higher-order thinking — not memorised curriculum content. All four components carry equal weight in a single session of approximately 2 hours 50 minutes:

Four equally weighted sections

ASET Test Components
ComponentDurationFormatQuestions
Reading Comprehension35 minMultiple choice35
Communicating Ideas in Writing25 minWritten response1 (visual prompt)
Quantitative Reasoning35 minMultiple choice35
Abstract Reasoning20 minMultiple choice35

Writing assesses original ideas from a visual prompt — markers evaluate relevance, complexity, and voice rather than spelling or handwriting.

Results are reported as standardised scores combined into a Total Standard Score (TSS) compared against the full cohort. Performance reports arrive by email — they are not percentages or ATAR equivalents.

Free official materials — a full Practice ASET and ASET Handbook — are available at education.wa.edu.au/gifted-and-talented. For component tactics, see our ASET preparation strategies and practice resources.

Some regional programs use an ALT (alternative) benchmark when cohorts are difficult to fill. Languages programs at Mount Lawley and Rossmoyne require ASET plus an interview (ASET contributes 80%, interview 20%).

Arts programs at John Curtin College of the Arts and other schools use workshop/audition selection; ASET exemptions are available for arts-only applicants.

Set realistic expectations: a TSS above 209.5 qualifies for consideration, but Perth Modern and top metro programs require scores 30+ points higher.
