Official NSW OC sample testHow to get the most from these papers
- 01
Start with one paper as a diagnostic
Have your child sit the earliest set first, in one timed sitting, with no prep beforehand. The result shows you which section needs the most attention before you plan any further practice.
- 02
Save the most recent set for last
The 2024 sets are the closest match to the current computer-based test. Keep one aside for a final timed rehearsal a couple of weeks before your child sits. The NSW Department of Education has not published the 2028-entry test date yet, so work back from early May 2027 and confirm once the official window is announced.
- 03
Review the answer, not just the score
An answer key tells you right from wrong; it does not explain why a particular option was chosen. Where a worked explanation is provided, read it together so your child understands the reasoning.
Sit a fresh paper, assessed by the Braintree Coaching AI Model
Braintree Coaching Australia runs full OC mock tests in the same three-component format as these papers, with per-section feedback from the Braintree Coaching AI Model, assessed against a teacher-designed rubric, and a breakdown so you can see exactly where to focus next. The first mock test is free.
Common questions about OC past papers
Are there official NSW OC past papers to download?
No. The NSW Department of Education does not publish used Opportunity Class Placement Test papers. The only authentic material from the Department is the official online sample test. The PDFs on this page are Braintree Coaching Australia practice papers written to mirror the official format — they are not NSW Department of Education papers.
When is the next NSW OC test, for 2028 entry?
The 2027-entry sitting is finished: it ran on 8 and 9 May 2026, with a make-up test on 22 May 2026 and placement outcomes released from 9 September 2026. As at 13 August 2026 the NSW Department of Education has not published the 2028-entry dates. Earlier cycles opened applications in November and sat the test in early May, so plan on that shape and confirm the exact dates on the Department key-dates page once they are announced.
How should we use these practice papers for 2028 OC prep?
Download one full set and sit it as a timed diagnostic first. Use the answer key the same day, log errors by section, then pull targeted drills from our OC practice resources before scheduling the next full mock. Pair paper practice with at least one computer-based mock so your child rehearses the on-screen format.
How do Braintree OC practice PDFs relate to the official NSW sample test?
The NSW Department of Education hosts one official online sample test, and that is the only authentic Department material. The PDFs on this page are Braintree Coaching Australia practice sets written to mirror Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills timing. Use the official sample first, then these sets for extra volume between full mocks.
Which OC practice set should we download first?
Start with the earliest Braintree set as a no-prep diagnostic under timed conditions. Save one recent set for a final rehearsal a couple of weeks before your child sits, and log errors by section after every paper rather than chasing a score alone.
What is the OC test format our practice papers follow?
Three computer-based components, verified against the NSW Department of Education on 13 August 2026: Reading (14 questions, three of them multi-part for 33 answers, 40 minutes), Mathematical Reasoning (35 questions, 40 minutes, five options, no calculator) and Thinking Skills (30 questions, 30 minutes, four options). Each component contributes one third of the placement score. Older guides that quote 30 minutes for Mathematical Reasoning or 35 questions for Thinking Skills are out of date.
What mistakes show up most often when we mark OC practice papers?
Across Braintree Coaching Australia tutor marking records, five patterns account for most lost marks: misreading what the question actually asks, vocabulary gaps in Reading, multi-step slips in Mathematical Reasoning, missing the governing rule in Thinking Skills, and pace collapse in the final third of a component. Sort the errors into those five buckets after each set, then drill the top two before the next paper. The full breakdown sits on our OC practice tests page.
How many OC practice papers should we sit before the test?
A workable rhythm for a Year 4 preparation year is one set as a baseline, four to six spaced through the middle of the year, and two in the final month under full timed conditions. Volume past that tends to entrench mistakes rather than fix them. Marking and error-logging matter more than paper count: allow about an hour after every set to mark, sort errors and choose the next drill.
When should we start preparing a child for 2028 OC entry?
If your child is in Year 3 now, 2028 entry is the live cycle and they will sit in Year 4. No separate 2028 format has been published, so treat the current three-component computer-based test as the reference until the NSW Department of Education announces changes. Early work means wide reading, mental maths and screen-based puzzles rather than waiting for application dates.

How to download and use NSW OC practice papers for 2028 prep
Follow these numbered steps when you move from the hero downloads to timed diagnostics and screen-based mocks across the preparation year before the 2028-entry sitting.
- Download one full Braintree practice set from the hero links. Pick the earliest set first and save Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills PDFs with their answer keys. These are Braintree Coaching Australia practice papers, not NSW Department of Education past papers.
- Sit the three components in order under timed conditions. Run Reading (40 minutes), then Mathematical Reasoning (40 minutes), then Thinking Skills (30 minutes) back to back with only short breaks and no calculator, matching the computer-based OC sitting your child will face in Year 4.
- Mark every question the same day and log errors by section. Use the answer key within about ninety minutes while the paper is fresh. Record misreads, vocabulary gaps, multi-step slips and pace problems — not just question numbers — before scheduling the next set.
- Pair the next session with a screen-based mock. Before downloading the next PDF set, sit at least one timed mock on our free mock-test hub or the official NSW online sample so practice includes scrolling, clicking answers and on-screen timer behaviour.
