A focused starter bundle covering the three multiple-choice HAST components used for IGNITE program entry. Based on the latest ACER test format.
Complete one test in each subject (Maths, Reading, Abstract Reasoning) under timed conditions. Don't prepare beforehand — this baseline reveals which HAST components are strongest and which need attention. Review every solution together, noting common error patterns. Pay special attention to Abstract Reasoning — most students find these question types unfamiliar.
Use the remaining 12 tests over 7 weeks (roughly 2 per week). Spend more time on weaker components. After each test, review detailed solutions carefully — understanding why an answer is correct builds transferable reasoning skills. Abstract Reasoning often shows the most improvement with practice because these question types are rarely encountered in school.
Revisit any tests where scores were lowest. Practise under strict timed conditions to build exam stamina. By now you will have a clear picture of your child's HAST readiness. South Australia's IGNITE program is a gifted education initiative for students with high intellectual potential, offered at Glenunga International High School, The Heights School, and Aberfoyle Park High School. Entry is determined by performance on the ACER Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST), which covers Reading Comprehension, Mathematical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, and Written Expression. The test is typically held in late February for Year 7 entry.
