Everything your child needs to prepare for the HAST used for IGNITE program entry — covering all four test components with vocabulary, reasoning, and writing support.
Complete one test in each subject plus one writing task under timed conditions. Review all solutions to identify which of the four components are strongest and which need the most work. This diagnostic shapes your entire preparation strategy for IGNITE entry.
Set a consistent schedule: 3–4 sessions per week (25–35 minutes each). Rotate through Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Abstract Reasoning. Start the Vocabulary course (3 lessons per week) and Daily Paragraph Editing exercises (3–4 per week). Complete one writing task per fortnight and compare against the model response.
Abstract Reasoning is often the most unfamiliar HAST component — many students have never encountered these question types in school. The 100+ Non-Verbal Reasoning tests build pattern-recognition skills progressively. Work through 3–4 per week alongside the core tests. This component typically shows the most improvement with consistent practice.
After 4 weeks of balanced practice, adjust the balance. Spend proportionally more time on weaker areas. The vocabulary and poetry courses strengthen Reading Comprehension and Writing simultaneously — strong vocabulary improves both components.
The HAST is approximately 3 hours across four components. In the final 4–6 weeks, run full timed sessions covering multiple components back-to-back. Build up to full-length practice under quiet, exam-like conditions to develop exam stamina.
Tests understanding of written passages including fiction, non-fiction, and informational texts. Questions require inference, analysis, and vocabulary skills at an advanced level for the student's year.

South Australia's IGNITE program is a gifted education initiative for students with high intellectual potential. It is offered at three Department for Education Special Interest Schools: Glenunga International High School, The Heights School, and Aberfoyle Park High School. Entry is determined by performance on the ACER Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST), which assesses Reading Comprehension, Mathematical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, and Written Expression. The test is typically held in late February for Year 7 entry.
The HAST is designed to identify high-ability students through reasoning and aptitude rather than curriculum knowledge alone. Abstract Reasoning tests pattern recognition independent of language or schoolwork — it is the component where targeted practice produces the most significant improvement. Each component contributes to the overall assessment that determines offers for IGNITE placement.
This Super Pack provides the depth needed across all four HAST components: 30 core practice tests (Reading, Maths, Abstract Reasoning), 100+ additional Non-Verbal Reasoning tests for systematic Abstract Reasoning improvement, 20 writing tasks addressing the Written Expression component, vocabulary courses that strengthen Reading Comprehension and writing vocabulary, and 50 poetry tests that develop inference skills. The Daily Paragraph Editing exercises improve the writing mechanics assessed in Written Expression.
