NSW does not publish an official OC school ranking. The list below summarises the schools families most often ask about, ordered by their long-term NAPLAN performance and recent placement competitiveness. Use it as a guide when shortlisting OC schools, not as a definitive league table — rankings shift year to year and most decisions should also weigh travel time, cohort size, and feeder-school strength.
| # | OC Primary School | Region | Indicative competitiveness |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Matthew Pearce Public School | Hills District | Very high — consistently strong NAPLAN cohort |
| 2 | Carlingford West Public School | Northern Suburbs | Very high — large applicant pool from feeder primaries |
| 3 | Summer Hill Public School | Inner West | High — popular with Strathfield/Burwood families |
| 4 | Ermington Public School | Northern Suburbs | High |
| 5 | Beecroft Public School | Hornsby Region | High |
| 6 | Hurstville Public School | St George Area | High |
| 7 | Strathfield North Public School | Inner West | Moderate to high |
| 8 | Bondi Public School | Eastern Suburbs | Moderate to high |

The OC Reading test is the section most Year 4 students lose marks on, not because the words are unfamiliar but because the time per passage is tight. Children need to read, infer and test their answer choices in roughly one minute per question. The drills below mirror the question types that have appeared on every OC paper since the 2024 format change.
Skim the passage in 60 seconds, then read each question before returning to the text. The OC reading paper rewards students who can locate evidence quickly rather than re-reading every paragraph.
Approximately 40% of OC reading questions require inference (“What does the author imply…”). Mark these for a second read; literal questions can be answered on the first pass.
For every multiple-choice answer, eliminate two options before guessing. Children who systematically test distractors lift their reading score by 4-6 marks on average across our cohort.
Around 1 in 5 questions tests vocabulary in context. Use the surrounding sentence to gloss the word — do not rely on memorised definitions, which rarely fit the OC passage style.
