How does Brisbane State High selective entry work?

Brisbane State High School (BSHS) is a co-educational Queensland state secondary school in South Brisbane, and its Academic Selective Entry pathway is a separate process from local enrolment. Children are ranked on one ACER test, the HAST. There is one sitting per entry year, one fee, and no second chance in the same cycle. This guide sets out what the school itself publishes, what it does not, and where to ask.

About Brisbane State High School

Brisbane State High School is a co-educational Queensland state secondary school in South Brisbane, within walking distance of the CBD and close to the South Brisbane and South Bank train stations. It enrols students from Year 7 to Year 12 across a broad curriculum, and admits a portion of each cohort through selective entry categories rather than local enrolment.

The school's own description of demand is the one worth quoting: entry through the Academic Selective Entry category is "limited and heavily oversubscribed each year". It repeats that phrasing for Years 8 to 11 entry.

Why is BSHS so heavily oversubscribed?

It is a government school in a central location with an established academic selective stream. That combination means far more children apply and sit the test than there are places available, and only those ranked above the annual cut-off are offered entry. BSHS does not publish that cut-off in advance, and it moves with the applicant pool each year.

Some figures you will see quoted for BSHS, including its founding year and total enrolment, do not appear on the Academic Selective Entry page. This guide leaves them out rather than repeating numbers it cannot point back to a source for.

How does BSHS decide who gets an offer?

Selection centres on the Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST), developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). The HAST assesses reasoning and higher-order thinking rather than curriculum recall. It rewards children who read closely, draw inferences, and apply what they know to unfamiliar problems.

What the school publishes about selection

The Academic Selective Entry page names the HAST as the assessment, publishes the test dates, and states there are no alternative dates. It also states that "test results are the primary selection criterion for entry" and that "students are selected on the basis of an order of merit". Alongside the test, Year 7 applicants are asked to submit school reports for the previous three semesters, the Year 5 NAPLAN report, and results of academic competitions and achievements.

What the page we checked on 15 August 2026 does not publish is how those supporting documents are weighted against the test result, or any cut-off score. The page refers to being "ranked above the cut-off" without stating what that mark is. Anything you read about the weighting, here or anywhere else, is worth confirming with the school at enrolmentenquiry@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au before you plan around it.

BSHS is direct about preparation: "past test papers are not available", and "we believe the best Test preparation is to be actively engaged in the current learning at Primary School." What is on the HAST-P test for Year 5 applicants?

Year 5 applicants sitting toward Year 7 2028 entry sit HAST-P, the primary version. BSHS publishes three components for that sitting.

Two things worth knowing about that table. BSHS publishes the three component timings and no total; they add to 100 minutes of section time, which is our arithmetic rather than a school figure, and it excludes whatever arrival and break time the school schedules on the day. Separately, ACER's general description of HAST-P lists four components, adding Abstract Reasoning. The three above are what BSHS lists for its own sitting. The two sources are not in conflict, they are describing different scopes, so attribute each to the right authority rather than merging them into one list.

For Year 6 applicants, BSHS names the test "Higher Ability Selection Test - Secondary (HAST)". Confirm the current Secondary structure on the BSHS page and ACER materials rather than assuming it matches HAST-P.

Reading Comprehension (35 minutes)

Children read passages and answer multiple-choice questions covering literal understanding, inference, vocabulary in context, and the author's purpose. Passages span narrative, informational and persuasive writing.

Mathematical Reasoning (35 minutes)

This section tests mathematical thinking rather than rote calculation. Expect number patterns, spatial reasoning, data interpretation, and multi-step word problems that need concepts applied flexibly.

Written Expression (30 minutes)

Children produce one sustained piece of writing from a prompt. Assessors look at the quality of ideas, structure, vocabulary range, sentence fluency and conventions. Thirty minutes is not long, so a child who spends two or three minutes planning and then writes to that plan tends to finish with something coherent.

Year 5 Application Pathway

BSHS runs a separate sitting for children currently in Year 5, applying toward Year 7 2028 entry. It means applying and testing about two years before your child would start.

Year 6 Standard Entry Pathway

The Year 6 pathway is the main route into Year 7 at BSHS, and the most competitive. Children currently in Year 6 apply, pay the $420 fee, and sit the HAST Secondary test on the published date. For Year 7 2027 entry that date was Monday 27 April 2026.

How it works

Applicants are ranked on their HAST result, and those above that year's cut-off are offered a place. Unlike the Year 5 pathway, this is a single-step process on the school's published timeline: apply, sit, receive an outcome.

What happens after the test?

BSHS does not publish a cut-off in advance. It varies each year with applicant numbers and the score distribution, so there is no number to aim at. Nor does the Academic Selective Entry page publish how offers are managed after the first round, including whether a reserve list operates. If your child is close to the line, ask the school what its current practice is at enrolmentenquiry@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au rather than relying on what a forum says happened in a previous year.

Entry in Years 8 to 11

BSHS also accepts selective entry applications for Years 8, 9, 10 and 11, and describes entry at these year levels as limited and heavily oversubscribed, exactly as it does for Year 7.

Fees, Payment, and Equity Bursaries

The $420 processing fee

BSHS charges a $420 enrolment application processing fee, which it describes as "non-refundable and non-transferable". The school states that only one Online Application Form needs to be submitted in a given year, and that the fee only needs to be paid once per year. Applying in more than one selective entry category in the same year does not mean paying twice.

Equity Bursaries

BSHS offers Selective Entry Equity Bursaries for families facing genuine hardship. The school acknowledges the $420 fee "may pose a challenge for some families facing genuine hardship" and says a bursary can "potentially cover or alleviate" it.

Bursary rounds close on their own dates, ahead of or alongside the application deadline. For Years 8 to 11, 2027 entry the closing date is Monday 17 August 2026. The Year 7 2027 and 2028 rounds are closed.

Send bursary enquiries to enrolmentenquiry@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au. That is the school's enquiry inbox, and the same address it lists for general enrolment questions. The other published address, bshsenrolments@brisbaneshs.eq.edu.au, is for document submission only. Both are real, which is why the wrong one is easy to use by mistake, and a hardship enquiry sent to a document queue is the worst place for it to land.

The Aspire Enrichment Program

Students admitted through the Academic Selective Entry pathway join Aspire, the school's enrichment stream.

The Academic Selective Entry page we checked on 15 August 2026 does not describe what Aspire involves: not the coursework, not the monitoring, not any continuing requirement. Descriptions of Aspire circulating on coaching sites and forums, including detailed lists of extension subjects and university partnerships, are not sourced from the school.

If Aspire is part of why you are applying, read the school's own Aspire material and ask BSHS directly what the continuing expectations are. Choosing a school on the strength of a program summary written by someone else is how families end up surprised in Year 8.

What we see Queensland families get wrong

Two patterns come up repeatedly in our Queensland intake conversations at Braintree Coaching Australia, and both are avoidable.

Blending two Queensland pathways into one preparation plan. Families targeting both HAST, for Brisbane State High School, and the Queensland Academies often underestimate how different the two are. The tests differ, the fees differ and the timelines differ, so preparation has to be split by pathway rather than merged into a single generic block of "selective prep". A child preparing for both needs two schedules, not one. This observation comes from our tutor intake notes across Queensland families, and it is the most common structural mistake we see at this stage.

Starting late, then over-correcting in the final weeks. With one sitting per entry year and no alternative date, the temptation once the date is close is to add hours. Our academic panel's recommended maximum for core selective preparation in Years 5 and 6 is roughly five to six hours a week including class time, tapering in the final fortnight rather than peaking. Those are our recommended caps, reviewed by the Braintree Academic Panel in July 2026, and they are coaching guidance rather than a rule or an outcome guarantee. If sleep, mood or family time is suffering, the number is too high.

Three practical consequences for a BSHS application:

1. Diarise per pathway, not per child. BSHS publishes one sitting date per entry year and states it offers no alternative dates. A clash with another school's test is yours to resolve.
2. Budget per pathway. The $420 fee is paid once per year and covers the BSHS categories you apply for that year. It covers nothing at any other school.
3. Practise the BSHS timings specifically. The 35/35/30 split is what your child needs to be fluent in. Blended practice that never runs a 30-minute writing task under time leaves the section families most often skip as the one least rehearsed.

How to Prepare for the BSHS Selective Entry Test

BSHS states that the "best Test preparation is to be actively engaged in the current learning at Primary School", and adds a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast, and parental support in keeping a sense of calm. That is the school's own advice and it is sound. Preparation on top of it should build reasoning under time, not memorise content.

What are the BSHS selective entry key dates for 2026?

As at 15 August 2026, both Year 7 application windows have closed. BSHS states that "Applications for Year 7, 2027 have now closed" and "Applications for current Year 5 students have now closed." The one selective entry window still open is Years 8 to 11, 2027 entry.
