Complete one test in each subject (Reading, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning) under timed conditions. Don't prepare beforehand — this baseline reveals which ASET components are strongest and which need attention. Review every solution together, noting common error patterns. Pay special attention to Abstract Reasoning — it has the tightest time pressure (20 minutes for 35 questions).
Use the remaining 12 tests over 7 weeks (roughly 2 per week). Spend more time on weaker components. After each test, review detailed solutions carefully — understanding why an answer is correct builds transferable reasoning skills. Abstract Reasoning often shows the most improvement with practice because these question types are rarely encountered in school.
Revisit any tests where scores were lowest. Practise under strict timed conditions to build exam stamina and time management. By now you will have a clear picture of your child's ASET readiness. The Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) is administered by ACER for entry to Perth Modern School and GATE programs across Western Australia. It covers four components: Reading Comprehension (35 questions, 35 minutes), Quantitative Reasoning (35 questions, 35 minutes), Abstract Reasoning (35 questions, 20 minutes), and Communicating Ideas in Writing (25 minutes). Each component generates a standard score that contributes to the Total Standard Score (TSS) used for ranking.

This is enough to assess your child's baseline performance in each area and build initial familiarity with the ACER ASET format. Abstract Reasoning is particularly valuable to practise — it tests non-verbal pattern recognition that most students have not encountered in school, and even a small amount of targeted practice can build meaningful confidence and accuracy.
