Everything your child needs to prepare for the ASET — covering all four test components with vocabulary, reasoning, and writing support designed for WA selective entry.
Complete one test in each multiple-choice subject plus one writing task under timed conditions. Review all solutions to identify which components are strongest and which need the most work. Pay special attention to Abstract Reasoning — at 20 minutes for 35 questions, it is the fastest-paced section and often the most unfamiliar.
Set a consistent schedule: 3–4 sessions per week (25–35 minutes each). Rotate through Reading, Quantitative Reasoning, and Abstract Reasoning. Start the Vocabulary course (3 lessons per week) and Daily Paragraph Editing exercises (3–4 per week). Complete one writing task per fortnight and compare against the model response.
Abstract Reasoning is often the most challenging ASET component — it has the tightest time pressure (20 minutes for 35 questions) and tests pattern recognition that most students have not encountered in school. The 100 Non-Verbal Reasoning tests build this skill progressively. Work through 3–4 per week alongside the core tests.
After 4 weeks of balanced practice, patterns will emerge. If Quantitative Reasoning is weaker, increase the proportion of numerical reasoning practice. If Writing needs attention, increase to weekly writing tasks with careful model response comparison. The breadth of material allows you to adjust the balance as needed.
The ASET takes approximately 2 hours across four components. In the final 4–6 weeks, run full timed sessions covering multiple components back-to-back. Build up to full-length practice under quiet, exam-like conditions. Time management is especially important for Abstract Reasoning.
Tests understanding of written passages through 35 multiple-choice questions in 35 minutes. Passages include fiction, non-fiction, and informational texts at an advanced level.

The Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) is the entry exam for Western Australia's Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programs in government secondary schools. Perth Modern School is WA's only fully selective academic school, while other schools such as Shenton College, Willetton Senior High, and John Curtin College of the Arts offer GATE streams. The ASET covers four components: Reading Comprehension (35 questions, 35 minutes), Quantitative Reasoning (35 questions, 35 minutes), Abstract Reasoning (35 questions, 20 minutes), and Communicating Ideas in Writing (25 minutes).
The ASET is designed to identify high-ability students through reasoning and aptitude rather than curriculum knowledge. Abstract Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning test thinking ability independent of school content — these are the components where targeted practice produces the most significant improvement. Each component generates a standard score, and the Total Standard Score (TSS) determines ranking for school offers.
This Super Pack provides the depth needed across all four components: 25 core practice tests (Reading, Quantitative, Abstract), 100 additional Non-Verbal Reasoning tests for systematic Abstract Reasoning improvement, 20 writing tasks addressing the Communicating Ideas component, vocabulary courses that strengthen both Reading Comprehension and writing vocabulary, and 50 poetry tests that develop inference skills. The Daily Paragraph Editing exercises improve the writing mechanics assessed in the writing component.
