Complete one test in each of the three multiple-choice subjects plus one writing prompt. Review solutions carefully to identify which components are strongest and which need the most attention. Abstract Reasoning is often the most unfamiliar — many students have never seen these question types in school.
With 15 core multiple-choice tests and 5 writing prompts, plan for roughly 2 tests per week. Rotate through Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Abstract Reasoning. Space the 5 writing prompts across the 6 months — one every 5–6 weeks. Start the Vocabulary course alongside (3 lessons per week) to build word knowledge that supports both Reading and Writing.
After 4 weeks of balanced practice, adjust the balance. If Abstract Reasoning is weaker, spend proportionally more time on those tests. If Mathematical Reasoning needs work, increase the maths practice ratio. The AI Writing Assessment Tool provides immediate feedback you can use to improve writing between formal tasks.
The HAST is approximately 3 hours across four components. In the final 4–6 weeks, practise completing multiple sections back-to-back under timed, quiet conditions. Building stamina for this duration is important — many students perform well on individual sections but lose focus during the full test.
South Australia's IGNITE program selects students for gifted education through the ACER Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST). The HAST covers four components: Reading Comprehension, Mathematical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, and Written Expression. Entry is for Year 7 at Glenunga International High School, The Heights School, and Aberfoyle Park High School, with the test typically held in late February.
