A focused writing preparation course covering all text types assessed in the Year 7 NAPLAN writing test, with Band-level exemplars and AI-powered feedback.
Complete one writing test under timed NAPLAN conditions (40 minutes). Do not prepare beforehand — this baseline reveals your child's current writing level. Compare the response to the Band-level samples to identify where they sit and what needs to improve: idea development, structure, vocabulary, or mechanics.
Before attempting each new prompt, read the corresponding Band-level samples and examiner commentary. Understanding what markers reward at each Band level is one of the most effective ways to improve. Focus on the differences between adjacent Bands — what separates a Strong response from an Exceeding response.
Write under timed conditions, then compare your response to the samples. Use the self-assessment checklist to evaluate your own writing against the marking criteria. Focus on one improvement area per writing piece — structure one week, vocabulary the next, cohesion the next. Gradual improvement is more sustainable than trying to fix everything at once.
Between the fortnightly main tests, use the AI Writing Assessment Tool for shorter practice pieces. The instant feedback helps develop self-editing awareness. This builds writing fluency and confidence between the more thorough parent-reviewed pieces.
In the weeks before NAPLAN (typically May), complete the remaining tests under strict 40-minute timed conditions. Include 3–5 minutes for planning and 2 minutes for proofreading. The goal is confident, structured writing within the time limit.
The NAPLAN Year 7 writing test requires students to produce a complete written response to a prompt within 40 minutes. Students respond to a single prompt that may be persuasive, narrative, or informative. The response is assessed across 10 criteria including audience, text structure, ideas, character and setting (narrative) or persuasive devices (persuasive), vocabulary, cohesion, paragraphing, sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling.
Writing is the NAPLAN component where targeted practice produces the most visible improvement in a short period. Unlike reading or numeracy, where skill builds gradually over years, writing benefits directly from understanding what markers look for and practising specific techniques. Students who know the marking criteria, have studied Band-level exemplars, and have practised planning under time pressure consistently perform better than those who approach the test without preparation.
This course provides 10 full-length tests — enough for one test per fortnight over a 5-month preparation period, or one per week for a more intensive 10-week approach. The Band-level sample responses with examiner commentary teach students to recognise what makes writing effective, and the AI Writing Assessment Tool provides additional practice opportunities with instant feedback between main tests.
