John Monash Science School Entrance Exam Guide: Year 10/11 Entry Pathway

This guide is for Victorian parents of Year 9 or Year 10 children weighing JMSS entry, including families outside a local catchment. It explains the published pathway and the next step that matches that pathway. It does not predict offers.

Is JMSS the same as Victorian SEHS?

John Monash Science School (JMSS) is not one of Victoria’s four Selective Entry High Schools: it is a Designated Purpose Setting senior secondary school for Years 10–12, with Edutest-administered written assessment rather than the Victorian SEHS ACER exam.

JMSS enrolment materials state that its entry processes differ from select-entry high schools. An ACER SEHS paper will not prepare your child for JMSS selection. How does Year 10 and Year 11 entry work?

JMSS Year 10 and Year 11 entry is a published two-pathway process for children currently in Years 9 and 10 respectively, with no school zone or catchment and no boarding.

JMSS publishes two entry pathways:

1. Year 10 entry: for children completing Year 9 (policy age band in the 2027 Year 10 PDF: turn 15 and no older than 17 in the first enrolment year, with Department of Education school-age exceptions where they apply).
2. Year 11 entry: for children completing Year 10 (2027 Year 11 PDF: turn 16 and no older than 17 in the first enrolment year, with the same exception note).

The school FAQ also states applications are open to children currently studying Years 9 and 10. There is no school zone or catchment: families from across Melbourne and regional Victoria may apply. JMSS does not offer boarding.

Two-stage selection (2027 policies)

Both year levels use a two-stage Entry Assessment:

1. Written tests under exam conditions, described as individual to JMSS.
2. Shortlist stage: Year 10 uses group activities and an individual interview; Year 11 uses an individual interview. Shortlisted families bring full academic reports for the previous 18 months.

The school FAQ adds that selection is competitive, with approximately 200 Year 10 and 30 Year 11 places each year. Treat those as FAQ approximations, not an offer-rate promise. Equity Consideration may cover up to 5% of available places under the published policies (Year 10 policy notes this may be subject to the Year 9 Cap).

Who administers the test, and where do we apply?

JMSS written Entry Assessment is administered externally by Edutest, and applications are also handled by Edutest. JMSS staff cannot influence registration.

JMSS does not support or endorse tutoring companies and does not encourage tutoring for the entrance test or interview stage. Factor that published stance into any preparation decision you make.

What is (and is not) published about the written paper?

The JMSS written tests are described by the school as individual to JMSS, changing each year, with no full question blueprint published before administration.

JMSS states it will not provide further information about the tests prior to administration, to protect integrity and equity. Policy language also says the school will not disclose further detail about the test or selection process beyond what it publishes.

The school FAQ names these areas at a high level only:

• academic potential
• literacy
• scientific aptitude
• mathematics and numeracy
• scientific writing

JMSS does not publish question counts, section minutes, or item types beyond those domains. Public EduTest five-section vendor timings on the EduTest parents page are not the live JMSS paper. The school describes its written tests as unique to JMSS and changing each year.

When do JMSS applications open for 2027 and 2028?

JMSS applications for 2027 entry were closed as of the 10 September 2026 check of the school’s admissions pages. 2028 applications are stated to open Mid-March 2027, with 2028 exam dates and fees unpublished on that check day.

What should we practise next?

JMSS preparation should start from the official enrolment policy and Edutest familiarisation the school recommends, not from Victorian SEHS ACER papers or an invented JMSS past-paper blueprint.

2. Familiarisation JMSS recommends: buy at least one practice exam from the Edutest practice store. The school and Edutest note that written expression and science material are not included in those practice sets. JMSS does not endorse tutoring companies for the test or interview.
