Review the detailed solutions together to identify which subjects are strongest and which need more attention. This baseline helps you prioritise your child's practice time over the next 6 months.
With 40 tests across three subjects plus 10 writing prompts, you have enough material for roughly 2 tests per week over 6 months. Alternate between subjects — for example, Maths on Tuesday, Reading on Thursday, and a writing prompt on Saturday. Start the Vocabulary course alongside practice tests, aiming for 3–4 vocabulary lessons per week.
After each Maths and Thinking Skills test, watch the video explanations for any questions your child got wrong. Understanding why an answer is correct (not just what the correct answer is) builds the reasoning skills that transfer to new questions on test day. Keep a notebook of common mistake patterns.
Use one writing prompt per week. After your child writes their response, compare it side-by-side with the Band 6 model response. Focus on three things: structure (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion), vocabulary choices, and persuasive or narrative techniques. Improvement in writing takes consistent practice over weeks, not days.
Save 2–3 tests from each subject for full timed mock exams in the final month before the test. Simulate exam conditions: quiet room, no breaks, strict timing. This builds stamina and reduces anxiety on test day.
The NSW Selective Test assesses four equally weighted components: Reading (17–30 questions, 40–45 minutes), Mathematical Reasoning (35 questions, 40 minutes), Thinking Skills (40 questions, 40 minutes), and Writing (1 prompt, 30 minutes). Each contributes 25% to the total Calculated Placement Score. Around 18,000 students sit the test each year for approximately 4,200 places.
