NAPLAN Year 5 practice tests 2027 — parent guide
Quick answer
NAPLAN Year 5 tests four domains online in 10–22 March 2027: Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy. Start Braintree Coaching Australia's small Year 5 library below with one Reading set (about 20–25 minutes), then review the worked example together. Save or print one skill and next step from that card. Keep the first session to one domain. It is not a full exam.

What Year 5 NAPLAN practice can parents start today?
Open Braintree Coaching Australia's Year 5 library: distinct Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy sets plus a separate online writing task, each with length, where the items came from, and online delivery labels. It is a small home-practice library, not a full NAPLAN exam, not a recycled Year 3 pack, and not an official ACARA paper.
Before you start: On-page Year 5 Reading, Language Conventions, Numeracy and online writing sets are open now. No account is needed for the HTML samples. A printable PDF follows named specialist review.

How do we start?
Open the Year 5 practice-set page. For the first session, try one domain set with the worked solution: Reading, Language Conventions, Numeracy, or the separate online writing task.
When is one set finished?
One Year 5 domain set is finished when your child has worked the items with solutions (or completed the online writing task with structure review). This library is not a full exam.
Which year practice guide should we open?
Year 5 has its own practice library. Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 each open their own library from the year chooser.
What the Year 5 library covers
ACARA assesses four domains. Year 5 practice includes distinct short sets for Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy, plus a separate online writing task. It is not a full exam.
| Coverage | Detail | Sample availability |
|---|---|---|
| Writing | Online | In the Year 5 practice library (small set, not a full exam) |
| Reading | Online | In the Year 5 practice library (small set, not a full exam) |
| Conventions of Language | Online | In the Year 5 practice library (small set, not a full exam) |
| Numeracy | Online | In the Year 5 practice library (small set, not a full exam) |
This page ships a small Year 5 library only. Years 3, 7 and 9 have their own practice libraries. Use each year page’s guide where labelled.
Year 5 NAPLAN is all online, including writing, so sessions run a little longer than Year 3 and lean toward inference with evidence. Open one Year 5 domain set below, review the worked example, then stop. This library is small home practice, not a full exam and not a recycled Year 3 pack.
What is in the Year 5 practice library?
A small Braintree Coaching Australia library for Year 5: distinct Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy sets plus a separate online writing task. Each set lists length, where the items came from, and online delivery. This is not a full NAPLAN exam and not a recycled Year 3 pack.
| Set | Length | Online / print | Where it came from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading2 items | About 12–15 minutes (2 items) | Online (preferred) or print | Original Braintree Coaching Australia Year 5 items, not an ACARA paper |
| Language Conventions2 items | About 10–12 minutes (2 items) | Online (preferred) or print | Original Braintree Coaching Australia Year 5 items, not an ACARA paper |
| Numeracy2 items | About 12–15 minutes (2 items) | Online (preferred) or print | Original Braintree Coaching Australia Year 5 items, not an ACARA paper |
| Writing (online)1 item | About 20–25 minutes (1 separate online task) | Online / typed only (Year 5 delivery) | Original Braintree Coaching Australia Year 5 primary-band prompt. An informal home mark is not an official NAPLAN result. |
Worked example — Reading
Passage: Jordan arrived at the computer lab fifteen minutes early, plugged in a spare USB, and opened the presentation twice to check the slides still loaded. Only then did he sit near the projector and wait for the rest of the group.
Question: What can you most reasonably infer about Jordan?
Correct option: He wants to be ready before the group demo starts.
Method: Early arrival, a spare USB, and a double-check of the slides are actions that support preparedness — the passage never says the file failed or that he prefers working alone.
Why a tempting wrong option is wrong: The “forgot the file at home” option is tempting if a child invents a problem, but nothing in the passage shows a missing file.
Try this next: Ask your child which two actions in the passage are evidence of planning, not just “arriving early.”

One skill to revisit
One skill to revisit is the single skill your child should practise again after this worked example, plus one concrete next step. Save or print that pair on this device — we keep those labels only, not your child’s answers.
- Skill
- Reading: infer planning from actions in the passage
- Next step
- Ask your child which two actions in the passage are evidence of planning, not just “arriving early.”
Save keeps the skill and next step on this device. Print opens a paper copy and may also keep those labels on this device for reopening. Neither option stores your child’s answers.
These Year 5 items are Braintree Coaching Australia originals for home practice. A named specialist has not yet signed them off as a full reviewed paper, so treat this as a small practice library. On-page samples are open now; a printable PDF follows that review.
Who does this Year 5 practice guide help?
Braintree Coaching Australia's Year 5 NAPLAN practice guide is for parents and educators who want one calm first home-practice night: short Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy sets plus one online writing task with worked solutions. Start one domain, review the method together, then stop. These sets are shorter than an official ACARA sitting, are not a recycled Year 3 pack, and are not ACARA papers.
How may educators reuse this pack?
You may link to this guide and its companion /resources pack landing, and quote short excerpts with attribution to Braintree Coaching Australia. Do not republish the question stems, worked solutions or downloadable sets as your own product. These materials are not official ACARA papers. This is not a Creative Commons grant; ask us if you need a written reuse licence.

How is Year 5 NAPLAN delivered in 2027?
Year 5 completes all four NAPLAN domains online: Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy. Year 3 is the only year level that sits writing on paper. ACARA states the year-level delivery split on what's in the tests and in the writing-test FAQ.
Writing (online). Your child types a narrative or persuasive practice response on the school device. Years 3 and 5 share ACARA's primary writing-prompt band (distinct from Years 7 and 9).
Interface familiarity. For question types and online controls (not a score predictor), use ACARA's public demonstration site.
What should Year 5 practice look like before NAPLAN?
Year 5 NAPLAN practice is one online domain session (about 20–25 minutes), including typed writing when you choose Writing. Keep the first sitting to one domain so you can review one method together. It is not a recycled Year 3 paper-writing start.
Age fit. Year 5 children are typically 10–11 and may be sitting NAPLAN a second time (some miss Year 3 for interstate moves or exemptions). They can handle a short online stretch, but still need calm review, not a full mock every weekend.
Session shape. One online domain, about 20–25 minutes, then discuss the method and one tempting wrong option. Writing is online for Year 5 (unlike Year 3 paper writing). Session length is a Braintree Coaching Australia suggestion, not an ACARA rule.
What to practise by domain
- Reading. Inference or evidence questions where the answer is supported but not copied word-for-word. Ask which line in the passage proves it.
- Language Conventions. Editing-style punctuation or grammar in a full sentence. Name the rule your child applied (apostrophe, comma, tense).
- Numeracy. Multi-step measurement or number problems that need a written working line. Check units and whether the answer is reasonable.
- Writing (online). Type a primary-band narrative or persuasive practice response on the device your child will use at school. Same prompt band as Year 3; delivery is online. Structure and ideas still matter more than length.
Where to start this week
For the first Year 5 session, open Braintree Coaching Australia's Year 5 library and start with one domain only: the Reading inference item with its worked example (method, tempting wrong option, and a try-this-next check). Leave Language Conventions, Numeracy, and the online writing task for later short sessions. Keep that first sitting short enough to review one method together. These are in-house practice items in a small library, not a full exam, not a recycled Year 3 pack, and not an official ACARA paper.
When is the NAPLAN 2027 test window for Year 5?
The 2027 NAPLAN national test window is 10–22 March 2027. Schools schedule sessions inside that window — confirm exact days with your school.
Source: ACARA NAPLAN key dates.
| Event | Timing |
|---|---|
| NAPLAN 2027 test window | 10–22 March 2027 (ACARA key dates) |
| School sessions | Within the March window — confirm with your school |
| Results to parents | Issued by your state or territory test authority through the school — timing varies; ask your school |
| 2028 early prep (Braintree Coaching Australia suggestion) | Our framing: Term 4 2027 familiarisation ahead of the 15–27 March 2028 ACARA window — not an ACARA deadline |
How should we use Year 5 practice tests at home?
At home, Year 5 practice is one online domain, then check the method and one tempting wrong option. Keep a mid-primary pace, not a full four-domain mock every weekend.
- Read the Year 5 preparation guide at Year 5 preparation guide
- Open the Year 5 sets via the link above (one domain per session: Reading, Language Conventions, Numeracy, or the separate online writing task)
- Complete writing online on the same kind of device your child will use at school
- After marking, use Save or Print on One skill to revisit below the worked example — one skill is enough before the next session
- Confirm your school session dates for the March 2027 window

Frequently asked questions
- When does my Year 5 child sit NAPLAN in 2027?
- ACARA sets the 2027 NAPLAN window at 10–22 March 2027. Schools schedule sessions within that period. Confirm exact dates with your child's school.
- Is Year 5 NAPLAN online or on paper?
- All four Year 5 domains are online, including writing. Year 3 is the only year level that completes writing on paper. Confirm session logistics with your school.
- How long is each Year 5 NAPLAN domain in the official sitting?
- ACARA scheduling lengths for Year 5 are Writing 42 minutes, Reading 50 minutes, Language Conventions 45 minutes, and Numeracy 50 minutes (NAPLAN test window and scheduling). Braintree Coaching Australia's short Year 5 sets are home practice only, not those official sitting lengths.
- How is Year 5 practice different from Year 3?
- Year 5 completes all four domains online, including writing. We suggest a slightly longer session (about 20–25 minutes per domain) and reading work that leans toward inference with evidence. Years 3 and 5 still share ACARA's primary writing-prompt band, distinct from Years 7 and 9.
- Is Braintree Coaching Australia's Year 5 library an official NAPLAN paper?
- No. It is a small in-house Year 5 library: distinct Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy sets plus a separate online writing task. It is not a full NAPLAN exam, not a recycled Year 3 pack, and not an official ACARA paper. ACARA publishes older full papers (2012–2016) on the NAP site; those pre-date the current online format.
- How should we use practice tests at home?
- Sit one Year 5 online domain set for about 20–25 minutes (our suggestion, not an ACARA timing). After marking, ask your child why a plausible wrong option looked tempting. One skill to revisit is enough before the next session. This library is not a full exam.
