Penrith, Girraween and Hurlstone differ in school type, Year 7 place count and commute corridor. The NSW Department of Education publishes place tables and addresses, but no ranking and no minimum entry scores.

All three admit Year 7 through the Placement Test sat in Year 6. Place counts come from the NSW Education selective schools list; parity from 2027 is in the fair access policy. We do not rank these three.

What place counts apply from the 2027 intake?

From the 2027 intake, co-ed selective schools must offer equal places to girls and boys. The NSW Education selective schools list lists Penrith with 150 Year 7 places (75/75), Girraween with 120 (60/60), and Hurlstone with 150 day places (75/75).

The parity rule is live for 2027 entry. Girraween's smaller cohort means fewer offers each year, not an easier or harder pathway.

Does Hurlstone's agricultural curriculum change the choice?

Hurlstone's agricultural curriculum changes the choice when your child would thrive on farm-based and environmental science as a core subject: agricultural studies are compulsory at NSW fully selective agricultural high schools, not an optional elective.

Penrith and Girraween are fully selective without an agricultural focus. Hurlstone in Glenfield is one of four fully selective agricultural high schools on the department's list.

A count that small settles nothing about whether the programme suits your child. You decide whether curriculum fit outweighs corridor convenience.

How should you rank these three schools on your preference list?

Rank Penrith, Girraween and Hurlstone by willingness to accept a place: curriculum fit, then commute corridor, then realistic backup.

1. Confirm curriculum fit. List Hurlstone only if you would accept an agricultural programme; declining later wastes a slot.
2. Map your commute corridor. Penrith suits outer west and Blue Mountains families, Girraween the Parramatta and Hills fringe, Hurlstone the south-west. We do not publish travel-time minutes; test the route yourself.
3. Put your most-wanted realistic school at #1. The application accepts three preferences on one form.
4. Use #2 and #3 as honest backups. Reserve movement only reaches schools on the list you submitted, so an aspirational #1 with no fallback leaves nothing to move to. We do not publish per-band movement timing for these three schools, so when a band moves in 2026 is not something we can tell you.
5. Revisit before reserve decisions. Movement continues until 3 December 2026 for 2027 entry, but only for schools on your submitted list.

What does a realistic three-school preference list look like?

A realistic three-school preference list orders schools by willingness to accept a place, not by perceived prestige.

A Parramatta family who would commute daily to Girraween but could stretch to Penrith might list #1 Girraween, #2 Penrith, #3 Hurlstone — the third only if the child would accept the agricultural programme. If outdoor practical work is a deal-breaker, swap Hurlstone out entirely rather than list a backup you would decline.

A Blue Mountains family reverses it: #1 Penrith, #2 Girraween, #3 Hurlstone. A Campbelltown or Liverpool household might lead with #1 Hurlstone. The pattern holds: corridor first, curriculum gate for Hurlstone, then honest backups. None of these predict offers — they show how ordering shifts with household geography, without inventing difficulty ranks the department does not publish.

What happens after results day in August?

After results day, the NSW Department of Education releases placement outcomes centrally. For Year 7 2027 entry, outcomes were expected on 19 August 2026 and reserve-list decisions continue until 3 December 2026 (see the application process page).

Accept or decline through the department's online system. We publish no 2026 reserve-band movement timing for these three schools — the department publishes no per-school movement schedule, and we publish no 2026 per-band window.
