Complete one test in each of the four multiple-choice subjects plus one writing task under timed conditions. Review solutions carefully to identify which components are strongest and which need the most attention. This diagnostic shapes your practice plan for the remaining 5 months.
With 18 core multiple-choice tests and 5 writing tasks, plan for roughly 2 tests per week over 6 months. Rotate through Reading, Maths, Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning. Space the 5 writing tasks across the 6 months — one every 5–6 weeks with careful model response comparison. Start the Vocabulary courses alongside (3 lessons per week).
After 4 weeks of balanced practice, adjust the balance. If Verbal Reasoning is unfamiliar, spend proportionally more time on those tests and vocabulary. If Mathematics needs work, increase the maths practice ratio. The writing tasks are important — many students under-prepare for Written Expression and lose marks on a component that rewards planning and structure.
The SEHS exam is approximately 2 hours 35 minutes across five sections. In the final 4–6 weeks, practise completing multiple components back-to-back under timed, quiet conditions. This builds the concentration needed for the full exam. Many students perform well on individual sections but lose focus during the complete test.
Victoria's four Selective Entry High Schools — Melbourne High School, Mac.Robertson Girls' High School, Nossal High School, and Suzanne Cory High School — select Year 8 students for Year 9 entry through a centralised ACER exam. The exam covers five components: Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Written Expression, taking approximately 2 hours 35 minutes in total.
