About this resource

Quick Answer

Braintree Coaching Australia's Year 3 NAPLAN practice library for the 2027 window (10–22 March) gives distinct Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy sets plus a separate paper writing task. Each set lists length, where the items came from, and online/print (or paper) labels. It is not a full exam and not an official ACARA paper. Official ACARA sitting lengths are Writing 40 minutes and other domains 45 minutes; these sets are shorter home practice. Start one domain below, then review the worked solution together.

This page is the downloadable companion to the Year 3 NAPLAN practice tests guide. The shared Years 3–9 interim sample at NAPLAN sample questions remains available for other year levels.

Who does this Year 3 pack help?

Braintree Coaching Australia's Year 3 NAPLAN practice pack is for Year 3 parents and educators who want a calm first home-practice night: short Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy sets plus one paper writing task with worked solutions. Start one domain below, review the method together, then stop. These sets are shorter than an official ACARA sitting and are not ACARA papers.

How may educators reuse this pack?

You may link to this page and quote short excerpts with attribution to Braintree Coaching Australia. Do not republish the question stems, worked solutions or downloadable sets as your own product. These materials are not official ACARA papers. This is not a Creative Commons grant; ask us if you need a written reuse licence. For selective-exam mock patterns (not NAPLAN ranked error rates), see common practice errors we see in selective exam mocks.

What is included in the Year 3 library?

The Year 3 library is four labelled Braintree Coaching Australia practice pieces: three short Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy sets and one separate paper writing task. It is not a full NAPLAN sitting.

SetItemsSample lengthOnline / print
Reading2About 10–12 minutesOnline (preferred) or print
Language Conventions2About 8–10 minutesOnline (preferred) or print
Numeracy2About 10–12 minutesOnline (preferred) or print
Writing (paper)1 separate taskAbout 15–20 minutesPaper / pencil only

Provenance: Original Braintree Coaching Australia Year 3 items, not an ACARA paper. Official ACARA sitting lengths (NAPLAN test window / scheduling: Writing 40 minutes; other domains 45 minutes) are scheduling figures. These sets are shorter home practice.

What does a Year 3 Reading worked example look like?

Passage: On wet mornings, Mina packed her rain jacket before breakfast. She left her scooter in the hallway, walked under the covered path to the gate, and always checked the sky once more before stepping onto the footpath.

Question: What is this passage mostly about?

Correct option: Mina has a careful wet-weather morning routine.

Method: Repeated actions (packing the jacket, leaving the scooter, using the covered path, checking the sky) show a routine. The scooter distractor invents a preference the passage never states: she left the scooter behind.

What is in the Year 3 Reading set?

Question 1 — main idea

Use the worked example above first. The full multiple-choice options are in the practice activity on this page. Then ask your child to point to the sentence that proves Mina planned for rain.

Question 2 — detail with evidence

Passage: Before the class garden visit, Tom filled a small bottle with water, labelled it with his name, and put it in the side pocket of his bag so it would not tip.

Question: Which detail best shows Tom wanted the bottle to stay safe?

Look for the purpose clause “so it would not tip.” Labelling identifies the bottle; it does not stop tipping.

What is in the Year 3 Language Conventions set?

Question 3 — spelling

Which word is spelled correctly: freind, friend, frend, or frined? The correct spelling is friend.

Question 4 — punctuation

Choose the sentence with a comma after the short opener: Before school, we packed our bags.

What is in the Year 3 Numeracy set?

Question 5 — number

What is 36 + 29? Method: 36 + 30 = 66, then subtract 1 → 65.

Question 6 — measurement

A string is 50 cm long. Priya cuts off 18 cm. How long is left? 32 cm (50 − 10 = 40; 40 − 8 = 32).

How should Year 3 writing be practised on paper?

Prompt: Write a short story about helping a neighbour on a windy afternoon. Plan your beginning, middle and end before you start writing.

Practise on paper with a pencil. Judge structure and ideas, not length. Do not treat a home comment as an official NAPLAN writing result.

Annotated structure sample: Beginning: the wind at the letterbox; Middle: helping gather tipped recycling; Ending: a clear path and a proud goodbye.

What should parents do after one Year 3 set?

If you want a calmer Year 3 reading warm-up that is not NAPLAN-shaped — one original passage with literal, inference and vocabulary questions — open the Year 3 reading comprehension practice pilot first, then come back to one domain set here.

Questions parents ask about this pack

No. This is a small Braintree Coaching Australia home-practice library with short Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy sets plus one separate paper writing task. It is not a full sitting and not an official ACARA paper.

On paper with a pencil. Plan beginning, middle and end. Judge structure and ideas, not length. An informal home comment is not an official NAPLAN writing result.

Yes. Online practice matches classroom devices; print is fine for a calm first pass. Writing stays on paper for Year 3.

ACARA scheduling lengths are Writing 40 minutes and Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy 45 minutes each (https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/key-dates/naplan-test-window). The sets on this page are shorter home-practice lengths, not official sitting times.

Which version of this practice set is this?

Braintree Coaching Australia stamps every published practice set with a set ID and version. If a worked solution or stem looks wrong, report it with the item ID so the team opens the same pack you downloaded. A review date appears here only after a named reviewer has checked every item. Changing the resource page date does not count as that review. Next: open the report form, pick the item ID, then send the email.
