Queensland Academies Year 7 sample questions with worked solutions

The Queensland Academies EduTest-style entrance assessment for Year 7 entry at QASMT has five timed sections: verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, reading comprehension, mathematics, and written expression. Students typically sit the exam in Year 5. The items in the printable pack mirror those section types.

How to use these questions

Ask your child to attempt each question first, then read the worked solution together and discuss where their reasoning matched or differed. One or two questions per session is enough — the goal is to practise explaining method under time pressure.

Sample question — verbal reasoning analogy

Question: Reef is to ocean as canopy is to ___

State the relationship: a reef is a feature found in an ocean. A canopy is a feature found in a forest. The worked solution in the PDF explains why “forest” is the best answer and why “branch” is a common trap.

Sample question — numerical reasoning

Question: A sequence begins 3, 7, 15, 31, … What is the next number?

Find how each term relates to the previous one. Here, multiply by 2 and add 1: (3×2)+1=7, (7×2)+1=15, (15×2)+1=31. The next term is (31×2)+1 = 63. The PDF includes the full worked solution.

Sample question — reading comprehension

Reading items test inference, vocabulary in context, and main idea. The PDF walks through how to use surrounding context before choosing an answer — especially when contrast words like “despite” change the expected direction.

How your child can check their own work

Before reading the solutions, ask: “Which option did you eliminate first, and why?” For numerical items, estimate whether the answer should be larger or smaller than the starting numbers. For reading, point to the exact phrase that supports the chosen answer.
