Complete one test in each multiple-choice subject plus one writing task under timed conditions. Review all solutions to identify which of the five components are strongest and which need the most work. This diagnostic shapes your entire preparation strategy.
Set a consistent schedule: 3–4 sessions per week (30–40 minutes each). Rotate through Reading, Maths, Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning. Start the Vocabulary course (3 lessons per week) and Daily Paragraph Editing exercises (3–4 per week). Complete one writing task per fortnight and compare against the model response.
Verbal Reasoning is often the most unfamiliar SEHS component — many Year 8 students have never encountered these question types in school. The 100+ Verbal Reasoning practice tests build this skill progressively. Work through 3–4 per week alongside the vocabulary courses, which directly support verbal reasoning performance.
After 4 weeks of balanced practice, patterns will emerge. If Quantitative Reasoning is weaker, increase the proportion of numerical reasoning practice. If Writing needs attention, increase to weekly writing tasks with careful model response comparison. The breadth of material in this pack allows you to adjust the balance as needed.
The SEHS exam is approximately 2 hours 35 minutes across five sections. In the final 4–6 weeks, run full timed sessions covering multiple components back-to-back under quiet, exam-like conditions. Stamina matters — many students perform well on individual sections but lose focus during the full exam.
Tests understanding of complex written passages at an advanced level. Students read fiction, non-fiction, and informational texts, then answer questions requiring inference, analysis, and critical evaluation. The SEHS Reading section is 25 minutes.

Victoria's four Selective Entry High Schools — Melbourne High School, Mac.Robertson Girls' High School, Nossal High School, and Suzanne Cory High School — select Year 8 students for Year 9 entry through a centralised ACER exam. The exam covers five components: Reading Comprehension (25 minutes), Mathematics (30 minutes), Quantitative Reasoning (30 minutes), Verbal Reasoning (30 minutes), and Written Expression (40 minutes). Approximately 1,000 Year 9 places are available across the four schools.
The SEHS exam is designed to identify high-ability students through reasoning and aptitude, not just curriculum knowledge. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning test thinking ability independent of school content — these are the components where targeted practice produces the most significant improvement. The exam uses a 4% source-school cap, meaning no more than 4% of offers can go to students from the same Year 8 school, which intensifies the importance of individual performance.
