About this resource

The EduTest Year 7 scholarship paper has five timed sections: verbal reasoning (30 minutes), numerical reasoning (30 minutes), reading comprehension (30 minutes), mathematics (30 minutes), and written expression (15 minutes). The items in the printable pack mirror those section types.

How to use these questions

Ask your child to attempt each question first, then read the worked solution together and discuss where their reasoning matched or differed. One or two questions per session is enough — the goal is to practise explaining method under time pressure.

Sample question — reading comprehension

Passage: Lena paused at the classroom door, then walked back to her desk for the pencil case she had left behind. She checked the clock twice before the supervisor called “begin”.

Question: Which statement is most strongly supported by the passage?

Look for actions that show intent. Lena returns for her pencil case and checks the clock — both suggest careful preparation. The worked solution in the PDF explains why “Lena wanted to be fully prepared before the test started” is the best answer.

Sample question — numerical reasoning

Question: A sequence begins 2, 5, 11, 23, … What is the next number?

Find how each term relates to the previous one. Here, multiply by 2 and add 1: (2×2)+1=5, (5×2)+1=11, (11×2)+1=23. The next term is (23×2)+1 = 47. The PDF includes the full worked solution and common traps.

Sample question — written expression

Prompt: “Write a persuasive paragraph arguing whether primary students should have a longer lunch break. State your view clearly and give two reasons.”

Spend two minutes planning: opening sentence with your view, reason one with a specific example, reason two, short conclusion. Markers look for a clear position, organised paragraphs, and controlled vocabulary under time pressure.

How your child can check their own work

Before reading the solutions, ask: “Which option did you eliminate first, and why?” For numerical items, estimate whether the answer should be larger or smaller than the starting numbers. For reading, point to the exact phrase that supports the chosen answer.

Which version of this practice set is this?

Braintree Coaching Australia stamps every published practice set with a set ID and version. If a worked solution or stem looks wrong, report it with the item ID so the team opens the same pack you downloaded. A review date appears here only after a named reviewer has checked every item. Changing the resource page date does not count as that review. Next: open the report form, pick the item ID, then send the email.
